The work creates a space where the wind blows
freely and stirs up the waves. Amid countless hills
and mountains, uniquely Taiwanese flowers bloom.
Constructed with materials commonly seen in
Taiwan, such as peacock (fan-shaped) decorative
lights, signboards, and corrugated metal sheets,
the work features flowers that bloom despite
oppression. Inside the container tunnel, Taiwanese
poetry from different eras is interwoven with the
song Undercurrent by the band Sorry Youth. This
installation serves as an exhibition space, inviting
visitors to read, listen, and roam within it.
“Formosa” does not only refer to “beautiful island
(Ilha formosa)”, but also a name deeply embedded
in collective memory-evoking a familiar MRT station,
widely sung folk songs, and a prominent historical
event in Kaohsiung. By beginning the title with
“Formosa,” the work seeks to position the term as a
living narrative, continually told and reimagined.
If we trace the history of the Taiwanese people, we
will find that poets from different eras have reflected
their generations’ ㄒvisions of Taiwan. Through
reading, we embark on a journey to rediscover our
past selves. This work seeks to evoke thedreams we
have shared on this beautiful island of Taiwan.
