作品以鄭南榕所主張的言論自由精神為創作概念。鄭南榕年少時因父親任職於中興紙廠福利社而隨家人遷居宜蘭，因而與宜蘭建立了深厚的連結。

作品呈現「自由」的傳承與延續。同一座燈光裝置可在火鳳凰與綠色孔雀鳥兩種形象之間轉換，分別象徵過去與現在。火鳳凰代表解嚴以前，人們追求自由、浴火重生的精神；綠色孔雀鳥則象徵解嚴後的臺灣，在夜間燈火通明的城市中努力生活與打拚的生命力。兩種形象會隨著燈光變換色彩，並在轉換過程中彼此融合。

在臺灣經歷威權復辟之後，我們將抱持什麼樣的價值面對未來，又該如何讓自由之路繼續延伸，是本作品試圖探討的主題。

The concept of this creation is freedom of speech advocated by Nan-Jung Cheng. Cheng moved to Yilan with his family during his youth because his father worked at the employee welfare center of Chung Hsing Paper Mill, establishing a lasting connection between Cheng and Yilan.

The work explores how freedom is passed down and sustained across generations. A single lighting installation alternates between two forms—a phoenix and a green peacock—representing the past and the present respectively. The phoenix symbolizes the pursuit of freedom and the spirit of rising from the ashes before the lifting of martial law. The green peacock represents post-martial-law Taiwan and the vitality of people working tirelessly amid the island’s brightly illuminated nighttime landscape. Through changing colors, the two forms gradually shift and merge into one another.

In the wake of authoritarian resurgence in Taiwan, what values will guide us as we face the future, and how can we continue along the road to freedom? These questions lie at the heart of the work.
